Our friend and big league geologist Robert Zierenberg asked us to write a song about his sister, the real Z, a passionate advocate for wilderness in Arizona. We used a lot of Robert's lyrics in the song and made him a co-writer. A sky island is a remnant of a wetter, more temperate climate; for example a stand of pine trees on a mountain in the desert. As the climate heated up, the trees disappeared, except for the isolated mountain. That's a sky island.
